I am so grateful to all the colleagues, mentors, and business leaders who have helped me enhance my HR professional development over the years. In no particular order, I’ll share below 5 tips that have enhanced my professional success.
Active Participation in a local SHRM chapter
Don’t just join a local SHRM chapter – become active in it. Attend the meetings, meet new colleagues and create a circle of trusted advisors you can turn to for advice as you encounter thorny HR problems. Attend chapter meetings where you will hear from presenters on relevant HR topics, keeping you up-to-date on trends and best practices.
Volunteer
Capitalize on volunteer opportunities – whether it’s on a committee or via a position on a board. The networking opportunities here are just as important as the many leadership skills you will acquire as you become responsible for the operation and success of an organization.
Cultivate Your Network
It’s cliché but true – so many of us become insulated in our day jobs and don’t take the time to maintain our relationships until suddenly, there is a change in employment. If you find yourself in the job market without a safety net (your network), you will need to spend precious time making new connections and building relationships. Cultivate your network before you need it. And give as much as you receive. Become known as someone who helps others: the ROI is immeasurable.
Earn HR Certification
Whether you choose SHRM or HRCI, this additional credential will set you apart from many others in your field. Buy the materials, sit for the exam, and be proud once you add those letters after your name. Choose from options to study on your own, in a classroom, or on-line – whichever learning style fits you best.
Attend a SHRM Conference
There is no better HR development experience than attending the SHRM Annual Conference. The learning opportunities are limitless, not to mention that it’s loads of fun. If a smaller conference is to your liking, consider the Talent Management, Diversity or Legislative conferences that are also held annually.
